Reviews for A False Dawn

“A False Dawn makes good reading for anyone longing to stumble upon an unpublished John D. MacDonald Florida mystery. This isn’t quite that, but it will do nicely.
- Steve Glassman (Booklist)

“A darkly suspenseful, atmospheric thriller. Absolutely relentless. I refuse to believe that this is a first novel.  It’s just too damned good.”
- Steve Hamilton, Award-Winning Author of Night Work

“If Tom Lowe's debut novel, gives readers any insight into what's in store from the author, then mystery lovers are in for a treat.  Lowe masterfully weaves precise detail through his prose, epitomizing a "show, don't tell," storyline with more than one unexpected twist along the way.”
- Elizabeth Kalfsbeek (Sacramento Review)

“Lowe’s prose waxes elegiac in describing Florida.”
- Kirkus Reviews

“Tom Lowe’s A FALSE DAWN incites pulse pounding action that never flags. This is great read, and I hope we're looking at a series here.”
-Kingston Observer

“Lowe’s debut crime novel can be characterized as Edna Buchanan meets John D. MacDonald.”
- Library Journal

“This is an exciting investigative thriller starring a likable, reluctant hero.  Fans will enjoy Tom Lowe’s exhilarating tale.”
- Harriet Klausner

“This was a really good book by a first time author. It was in the same vein as Harlan Coben's writing.  Easy reading and keeps your attention from chapter to chapter.”
- Angie Yang, Goodreads Reviews

“I picked up False Dawn by Tom Lowe as a fluke but the joke was on me.....I ended up reading the entire book. When I say this is a page turner that you'll have trouble putting down, I'm not exaggerating.  Filled with a gripping story and gritty prose, the writing and story line reminds me a lot of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux series.”
- Robert Busko, Amazon Review

“The unexpected twists and turns in Lowe's first crime novel, A False Dawn, are indeed reminiscent of John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series. But then the scene shifts and the plot delves into a Florida Noir nightmare of terrifyingly plausible acts of human trafficking, sexual slavery and body part harvesting. The likeable, widowed, former homicide detective Sean O'Brien, reluctantly tackles some of the most twisted, yet believable evil doers imaginable.”
- Margot Gould, Amazon Review

“I enjoyed this book. I needed a hardboiled detective/mystery and this has all the hallmarks of a good one, beginning with its setting in Florida, which so often creates a great environment for the rogue detective hero.  The story was well-paced and the characters good. I could see this becoming a TV series.”
- Ted Kendall, Amazon Review

“This was a really good book by a first time author. It was in the same vein as Harlon Coben's writing. Easy reading and keeps your attention from chapter to chapter.”
- Angie Collins, Amazon Review

“A very good debut, looking forward to next offering. In the vein of some fine Florida mystery/thriller writers, i.e., Randy Wayne White, Jonathan King, James C. Hall. Sean O'Brien, early retiree from Miami PD, searches for the murderer of a young girl in the migrant camps of rural Florida.”
- Mystery Mike, (Mike Ayers) Shelfari Review

Reviews for The 24th Letter

“Tom Lowe’s second novel, The  24th Letter, is so good it ought to be required reading on every adrenaline-addicted, mystery-thriller reader’s must read list.”
- Tim Davis, Book Loons Review

“Warning: don’t start reading Tom Lowe’s new novel, The 24th Letter during a half-hour lunch break unless you have a very understanding boss.   Lowe’s straight-forward, fast-paced writing style is addictive.”
- Sue Merrel, Grand Rapids Press

“Lowe’s heated follow-up to 2009’s A False Dawn catapults former Miami homicide detective Sean O’Brien into a desperate race to save the life of a man he helped send to death row.”
-Publisher’s Weekly

“The second O'Brien mystery (see A False Dawn) is an action-packed thriller in which the countdown to the execution hangs over the heads of those who now believe the death row inmate is innocent.”
- Harriet Klausner

“If you like Michael Connelly and his character Harry Bosch, you have to read Tom Lowe’s The 24th Letter.”
-The Vero Beach Book Center

“The 24th Letter is very well written with a dark tone and enough action to enjoy.  It’s a cross between James Lee Burke, James MacDonald and Lee Child.”
- Sons of Spade Mystery Review

“The fast pace and physical smackdowns will be perfect for fans of TV's 24.”
-Kirkus Review

“If you like Michael Connelly and his character Harry Bosch you have to read The 24th Letter. I found myself just totally getting involved with the book and the characters...I could not WAIT to get to the end.  TERRIFIC storytelling, and a page turner that you will remember for a while!”
- David English, David’s Booktalk Radio Show

“Filled with lots of excitement, danger, and death, The 24th Letter is a first-rate thriller executed by a writer who definitely knows how to craft a superbly plotted adventure dominated by fascinating characters and provocative themes.”
- Tim Davis, Book Loons

“I liked the characters in The 24th Letter, as in A False Dawn, because the dialog is really very true on form. I liked the puzzle O'Brien was trying to solve, especially because of how O'Brien's own perspective was not moving faster than I was. I would think of the puzzle's meanings and maybe an end, and the play itself reveals these things in clips and pieces that O'Brien understood little better than I did. I love Lowe's style.
- Guy Sheer (Washington DC) Amazon Review

“An excellent read! Very fast pace, and had me guessing all the way through.  Humor and suspense. Tender and caring yet cunning.  I could not stop reading until I was done. I wish there was more to read by this author. I would buy anything he wrote. VERY GOOD!”
- Ann Davis (Atlanta, GA)

I enjoyed this book. It was suspenseful, but not too much that when somebody walks in the room you jump.  I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys suspense/murder mystery type books.”

Kandice Newren,  Goodreads Reviews

“A compelling thriller.   Thoroughly enjoyable mystery, good writing, likeable detective.  l check out the first book in this series at some point - I hadn't realized this was actually the second in the Sean O'Brien novels.”
- Suzanne Kimbal  (Dallas, TX)

“Tom, I just finished reading your second novel, The 24th Letter. I enjoyed it and can not wait to grab your first novel, False Dawn. I truly hope you are working on your next one.”
James Wilsey

Hi Tom- I had the good fortune to stumble onto A False Dawn when it first came out and I enjoyed it very much.  I didn't know you were due for a new book, but found it at the library, and read it this weekend. Now normally this would be ok, but I am a grad student, and it was too good to put down, and I should have been working on my own paper.  So I guess when I go back to my class I can mention your name and say you kept me from my research paper.  Ironically, my class is on the importance of literacy in our society. Anyway, great job-thoroughly enjoyed the book, and looking forward to reading more about Sean.
Best wishes, Kate Lukacs

Dear Mr. Lowe, I have been reading now for over 50 years and love my books.  I just wanted to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed your first one "False Dawn" and was a captured fan from page one!  I am now reading "The 24th Letter" and find it to be as well written as the first one.  Both books grab your attention immediately and do not let go.  I read the first one well into the early morning and then was disappointed that I was done! Please keep on writing. I have added you to my favorite author's list and will be looking forward to reading many more!
Sincerely. Sue Mersch

From a Mike Hammer Facebook site: I just finished reading a great mystery book. 'THE 24TH LETTER" by TOM LOWE. Its a good read.  His writing style reminded me of Mikey Spillane.  Sean O'Brien is a modern day Mike Hammer.   THE BOOK’S THAT GOOD! I am heading to library Monday to get his first novel - "A FALSE DAWN"
